The 10 DAY GREAT WILDEBEEST CALVING MIGRATION Every year the Serengeti plays host to more than one million wildebeests, more than 200,000 zebra and thousands of other animals In June and July wildebeest make their way across the Grumeti River moving northwest of the park, It’s an amazing scene. Early In December, the herds starts to make their way back down south to the southern Serengeti to feed on the short green grasses of the plains. By late January and early February, perhaps the greatest scenery of the Serengeti takes place with the wildebeest calving season.some 8 000 baby wildebeest are being born every single day. There is truly nothing that compares to seeing new-born wildebeest calves standing in minutes and able to run with the rest of the herd in three days. Such numbers of young and inexperienced animals are of course a magnet for Africa’s predators. Predators “big cats” leopards, lions, cheetahs, spotted hyenas, stalk the Serengeti plains along with African wild dogs, black-backed jackals. Your chances of seeing predator-prey relationship and indeed a kill are very high during the calving season – good news for wildlife photographers if not for the wildebeest.
