The range known as the crater highlands are a range of Volcanoes Mountain on the Ngorongoro conservation area, the Ngorongoro crater is the main part of the crater highlands, where the trekking start. On the crater highlands there are the several impressive peaks, with steep escarpments, Empakaai crater with unusual deepest lake in East Africa, the water falls, dense forests, and open grass land.

The Ngorongoro Crater highlands give you the chance for the spectacular view of the Eastern Great rift valley, Oldonyo lengai means the mountain of god in maasai language, Kilimanjaro far in the distance when the sky clear, its also home to many maasai people who grazed cattle here on grasslands for hundreds of years.

The trekking on this land it’s a combination of wildlife viewing by visiting the Ngorongoro crater and walking safari. You can start the walking safari from North of the Ngorongoro Crater at small maasai village call Nainokanoka to Olmoti crater, Empakaai crater, Naiyobi village to Lake Natron on the Great Rift Valley. On the trek we use donkeys to carry supplies and water as there is no road access to Lake Natron, you will be guided with the maasai man who land belong to.

DAY 01: NGORONGORO TO OLMOTI

After Breakfast, drive from Arusha to the ngorongoro conservation after the registration, you drive through the highland forest to the descending road to ngorongongoro crater for the game drive, the ngorongoro crater its six largest caldera in the world and most impressive for the large population of wildlife living here all the year around, its also the garden of wildlife in world. Here you can see the black mane lion, leopard, big tusks Elephant, cheetah, Buffalos, Black Rhino, gazelle and hundreds of wildebeest or White bearded Gnu and zebras. afternoon exit the crater to Nainokanoka village, here you will meet your maasai guide who will take you for the short trek up to Olmoti crater and down to munge falls, munge it’s the maasai words for the black and white collobus monkey. Stay overnight at Olmoti special camp site.

DAY 02: OLMOTI TO EMBAKAAI

From olmoti you follow maasai cattle trails north-east across the grasslands of Embulbul depression towards Embakaai crater, here the maasai come out of their bomas to great the travelers as they pass by,this is the good chance to meet with a local maasai people who grazed their animal on this land for hundred of years,on the trek apart of meet the local people you can also see the wildlife e.g. zebras, wildebeest, grant gazelle. Thomson gazelle golden jackal, ostrich, tawny eagle, and augur buzzard and other species of birds. Embakaai crater it’s the deepest alkaline lake in East Africa, its 83meters deep and 6 km across, here you will have a good views of Active volcanoes oldonyo lengai the maasi name for the holy mountain ,kerimasi mountain, and ketumbeinei mountain. When the sky clears you can see Kilimanjaro and mount meru in the far distance. Stay overnight at Embakaai camp site.

DAY 03: EMBAKAAI VIA NAIYOBI VILLAGE TO ACACIA CAMP.

After breakfast you take a walk down to Embakaai crater, the view from here down in to the crater is stunning. The steep inner walls are densely forested and drop to the flat crater floor, which is partly submerged under a lake, often surrounded by huge flocks of flamingos. This is home for the Buffaloes, baboon bushbuck, turacos, sunbirds, crows and birds of prey. Exit the crater and continuing on your trek to Naiyobi village, NAIYOBI its Maasai words for cold place. DAY 04: ACACIA CAMP TO ENGARESERO:

From Naiyobi you follow paths through beautiful grassy hills and patches of light woodland, along a ridge running parallel to the main Rift valley. The cone of oldonyo lengai. Which has dominated the view since leaving Embakaai becomes increasingly impressive. The path passes a distinctive hill called Emowoengoiliil gazelle horn and drops steeply, lush vegetation soon giving way to scrubby grass and patches of bare rock and lava. At the base of the steep section is a single tree offering welcome shade and a few remote Maasai hut. The route continuing leaving lengai on your right hand side and Great Rift Valley Escarpment wall on your left side. After a long day walk with hot and dust you will reach to the Ngaresero River which flows north from the Ngorongoro highlands into Lake Natron to swim in the clear running water is very refreshing. Stay overnight at Oldonyo lengai camp site or Lake Natron tented camp

DAY 05: EGARESERO AREA

There will be an optional of Oldonyo lengai climb. in the mid night you will drive at the base of the mountain, here you will start to walk up to lengai reach the top .there is two crater up on the summit one is active and the second is dormant, you can look down o the crater and see steam outlets and the growing cones of volcanic ash. Enjoy the sun rise behind the two peaks, the Kilimanjaro and mount meru, you descend down before the heat of the day, drive back to your camp, lunch, rest and in afternoon walk up to the gorge to visit the water falls. Stay overnight at Oldonyo lengai camp site

DAY 06: LAKE NATRON

After break fast, you will take a walk follow the Maasai cattle trails leave the Maasai settlement behind. The lake Natron its home for the pink flamingos and Greater flamingos, its the breeding site for the flamingos in East Africa. Stay overnight at oldonyo lengai camp.

DAY 07: A LONG DRIVE BACK TO ARUSHA

A long drive back to Arusha enjoy different views of landscape, mountain, crater, giraffe, ostriches, wildebeest depend the season, zebras, maasai people heading their cattle. Stay overnight at PLANET LODGE IN ARUSHA
